Two quotes and two links for a snow day

From: google.com

Arianna Huffington: “Self expression is the new entertainment, We never used to question why people sit on the couch for seven hours a day watching bad TV. Nobody ever asked, ‘Why are they doing that for free?’ We need to celebrate [this desire to contribute for free] rather than question it.”

Tim Cook at Apple: “This is the most focused company I know of, am aware of, or have any knowledge of… We say no to good ideas every day.” Cook then pointed out to analysts that every single product the company makes would fit on the single conference table in front of him. “And we had revenue last year of $40 billion.”

Bonus audio interview: my hyperbolic rants and a few insights about the future of ebooks. Double last-minute bonus: an audio interview about linchpins and software and startups.

And a bonus simple productivity tip, which I’ve been accidentally doing for years.

You may feel as though you’re on a hamster wheel when it comes to measuring your marketing. You run, run, and run some more, but don’t seem to be getting anywhere. That feeling is perfectly natural if you’re not measuring your ROI (Return on Investment) with your marketing. For years, I’ve been [...]

You probably don’t need to read the latest advice from the online marketing consultants to figure out the basic idea behind link building. Without links, your site won’t develop authority. Without authority, it won’t move up on the search engines. But even the most savvy online marketing consultant would have to admit that doing that [...]

Why are you apologizing?

From: google.com

I don’t understand blog posts, emails and other messages that begin with an apology.

If you’re sorry to interrupt me with that spam, don’t send it.

If you know that yet another blog post on a topic that’s not of interest to your readers will annoy them, don’t post it.

If you’re in HR and you know that no one in the office is going to read your office-wide spam about yet another inane meeting, don’t bother us.

On the other hand, if it’s important, if it needs to be said, if it benefits not just you but the recipient, then just send it. Instead of an apology, clearly label it so it’s easy to ignore or discard. Even better, don’t send everyone a message aimed at just a few people. It’s easier than ever to focus on the people you need to focus on.

Just because it’s more convenient for you to blast everyone in your address book doesn’t mean it’s smart.

Google Street View to Go Inside Shops?

From: google.com

It may seem crazy, but Google could soon be taking Street View indoors, after a number of retailers have reported Google coming to their workplace to photograph the inside of their stores.

According to the retailers, Google are using a 360 degree camera to take pictures of the inside of the store, including shots as they enter and leave the premises. If Google decides to integrate these images with Google street view, it will allow people to essentially walk into the store from the street on Google maps.

Heres an image from search engine land showing Google capturing images within a store.

According to the retailers, Google is asking permission before photographing each business. Heres what a couple of retailers had to say in the comments area over at SEL,

“I received a call about a month ago from Google employee that wanted to schedule a trip to all 6 of the stores with which I am associated in the NYC area. I didnt call him back but I do still have his contact information from the voicemail.”

“My father owns a small store in downtown Los Angeles. He was visited by a guy from google, that asked him if they could take pictures of the inside of his store. I checked it out and it seemed legitimate.

Google said that they would make an appointment and come in for about 15 minutes and photograph the entire inside of the store (public areas only).”

What do you think? Is this an invasion of privacy or the next step in Google street view?

“Analytics” Data Use in Google Algorithm

From: google.com

Spotted this interesting Google Web master Tools video today

Is Google Analytics data a factor in a pages ranking?

HUH?????? WHAT????? Did I just hear that right Matt? Google algorithms dont consider GA data when shaking things out? LOL, well sure maybe not the the data itself, directly from GA. You just confirmed that with us, but some how Google engineers are counting those clicks from desktops because that is essentially how your search personalization works. Right? If one desktop is getting a ton of clicks to one website, that website will more than likely show up more often (higher) in the SERPs. And this is just talking visitors, who knows what other analytics (time on site, bounce rate) could be tracked to enforce better results for searchers.

I think some true transparency needs to come soon on how much analytics data (doesnt matter if it is not coming from GA, its still analytics data) is used to help decide what sites rank above others. Especially from a personalization stand point.

Thoughts?

Art by GeoLocation on Google Maps

From: google.com

An interesting new mashup called GeoCoded Art enables users to view art by geographic region. Select a region of interest (county, then area) and view thumbnails for a quick view or art from that region. Then you can view the work or art on a map (Google or Bing maps) enlarge the piece of art or optionally view all works by the artist quite interesting and fun! See http://www.geocodedart.com
