New Font Styles in Google AdSense

From: google.com

After introducing ‘Standard AdSense font family’ back in February, Google AdSense is updating font styles for its ad units once again of late. Reportedly, AdSense is changing the default font used in the different ad units and it’s done on the basis of which ad font performs best in a particular ad unit.

Here are the new defaults:

Arial: 728-90, 336-280, 120-600, 120-240

Verdana: 300-250, 160-600, 468-60, 250-250, 234-60, 125-125, 180-150

Times New Roman: 200-200

The new fonts are expected to come into play within the next few days!

Google Updates Geotargeting Tool

From: google.com

Ive written on multiple occasions about Googles GWT Getargeting tool (see all geotargeting posts here), and webmasters have long griped about the inability to use the tool with ccTLD (country level domains such as .co.uk, .ie etc). Well it seems that Google are slowly adding more ccTLDs to the list of domains that can be geotargeted via Google Webmaster Tools.

Not sure of all the ccTLDs added yet, but it does appear that .me was added recently, adding to .tv and a handful of other vanity ccTLDs that webmasters can now geotarget away from their origin country.

.ie is still hardwired to Ireland though. More info hopefully direct from the horses mouth.

Mobile Search Lead by Google

From: google.com

In todays daily chart from the Silicon Insider we get to see how well the top search properties are doing on PCs in contrast to Mobile. It probably wont come as much of a surprise that Google has the lead in Mobile just as it does on PCs. It was interesting to note, however, that Yahoo is farther behind Google on Mobile than on PCs despite its highly touted mobile portal and tools.

Paid Click Share Up 44% for Bing

From: google.com

Microsoft Bings paid click share has risen 44 percent since their launch in June, according to a new report released this week by Efficient Frontier.

bing-logo1

The firm previously reported a 13% lift in paid search clicks in late June, so these new figures further cement that the launch of Bing has had a positive impact for Microsoft. The graph below indicates the rise in clicks since launch:

paid-click-share

Efficient frontier commented that Bing did particularly well in the travel and finance categories where they showed growth of 11 and 22 percent respectively. Im guessing theyve pulled this figure from an average of their clients campaigns, so the growth figures could be skewed slightly based on the profile of their customers.

Theres also potential for these figures to be inflated from all the hype surrounding the Yahoo!/Microsoft deal, with more people using or testing out Bing.

Nevertheless, I think this is a great thing for the industry as some real competition for Google AdWords will hopefully lower click prices and see some strong innovation from both platforms.

If youve noticed an increase in traffic from Bing, let us know in the comments below!

Two ways to hire (and a wrong way)

From: google.com

The wrong way first: interview someone for an hour. If you like them, have them interview three or four other people in your organization for an hour each.

You’ve invested five hours of your team’s time, but really you only were looking for approval, because you’d already decided you liked the person enough to work with them for years.

All the evidence we’ve seen shows that this is a lousy predictor of future performance. And, let’s tell the truth… if the first three people love the guy, are you really going to let the fourth, junior person veto him? Or is it just an annoying courtesy?

There are two approaches you can use as an alternative.

First, you can work with someone for months before you offer them a job. Your pool is smaller (freelancers, joint venture partners, interns) but the exposure to how they work is spectacularly different. You don’t get the thrill of finding a pearl in the oyster, the “wow, I found the most incredible hire!” bragging rights. Instead, you get exactly what you expect. Organizing for this sort of hiring isn’t particularly difficult, particularly in a down economy. Not surprisingly, I’ve had 100% success doing this.

Second, and with some controversy, you can admit that an hour interview is actually a five minute sniff test followed by 55 minutes of wasted time, multiplied by four colleagues. Tell the truth and switch to five minute interviews.

If you do five minute initial interviews, you can interview 12 times as many people for each job opening. This initial filtering takes precisely as much time as your wasted one-hour approach, but dramatically increases the chance you’ll find someone you actually have good pheromone and body language connection with. After the screening, I can only encourage you to do the projects, reference checks and other serious diligence you’re probably too exhausted to do after spending all those hours with one person…

This process takes a lot of work, but it definitely works. If you can interview 60 people in a day or two and then have the three best fits do projects, presentations and freelance work for you, you’re way ahead of a company that interviewed only three people and fell in love with one.

Search Ranking with Minute SEO Changes

From: google.com

SEOmoz has released its latest Search Engine Ranking Factors report which gives an idea on how SEO works in 2009. A total of seventy-two SEOs participated in SEOmoz’s survey that involved ranking possible factors used by Google while ranking websites, as well as a variety of questions pertaining current SEO trends and topics. The survey was completed earlier this year. The survey compiled the following as the top five ranking factors:

  • Anchor Text from External Links
  • Keyword Use in Title Tag
  • Raw Link Popularity
  • Diversity of Linking Domains
  • Keyword Use in Root Domain

If we compared this year’s list to that of 2007 survey by SEOmoz, it will come clear that the first three factors remain unchanged, however, the order is changed. The top five ranking factors in 2007 were:

  • Keyword Use in Title Tag
  • Global Link Popularity of Site (Raw Link Popularity above)
  • Anchor Text of Inbound Links (Anchor Text from External Links above)
  • Link Popularity within the Sites Internal Link Structure
  • Age of Site

SEOmoz’s 2009 survey ranking factors survey features negative ranking factors separately. It also features a new chart of Overall Ranking Algorithm elements.

Daily Finance, an AOL site, is reporting that Microsoft’s lobbyists hold weekly meetings where the discussion revolves around taking on Google. In attendance are consultants and others who oppose Google. The meetings have become known as “screw Google” meetings by DC insiders.

I used to work in politics. I used to work in DC. These type of meetings happen all the time, in all sorts of industries and with all sorts of issues. It’s not a Microsoft or Google thing. It’s not a Democrat or Republican thing. It’s a politics thing.

Google lobbyists meet to discuss Microsoft, I would assume. If they don’t, then Google should fire them for being crappy at their job.

Move on, there’s nothing to see here. Just politics as usual in the nation’s capital.
