Magic beans, TV and the web

From: google.com

New media isn’t the perfect marketing medium, and it won’t be until we find the magic beans.

TV had magic beans for forty years. For forty years, anyone, even a complete moron, could make a lot of money using TV ads. Buy enough ads, don’t screw up, you’re rich.

The hard part was buying enough ads, but once you did that, victory could be declared.

On the web, there are countless marketers just standing around waiting for someone to hand them the magic beans. And that’s the problem.

Marketing online takes too much measurement, patience, creativity, technical knowledge, flexibility, speed and authenticity. It requires too much thinking and not enough going out for dinner with clients.

Perhaps there will never be magic beans again. Perhaps marketing is about to transition to a new kind of profession, one that requires insight, dedication and smarts.

Or maybe someone will find some magic beans.

Google Faster to Compete with Bing’s Growth

From: google.com

As Bings market share continues to grow in the couple of months since launch, it might be time for Google to go into defensive mode and bring out something new.

Sure, weve seen the release of a new Google search engine, sandbox, but it appears to be in the very early stages of development and not being taken up by the broad public. Google need a fix and quickly.

So, how can Google put the pressure back onto Bing? The answer might just be in AJAX.

Google AJAX search is a search functionality which uses more advanced JavaScript to make search result pages load even faster by only loading new information as needed on new queries.

Michael Stoppelman, a software engineer at Yelp (and a previous engineer at Google) believes that AJAX is the key to Google overcoming Bings growth. Here, Michael explains why AJAX matters:

Money money moooooney. Site speed is a huge deal for search engines. Speeding up your results usually means more searches. Which also means more ad clicks, bing bing.

Some web gurus whove analysed the new Bing search engine have noticed that it produces results faster than Google, but an AJAX Google should be faster than Bing.

How will you know if youre getting the AJAX results? You will be able to tell by the URL. A normal Google Search has will have a thread similar to the following at the end of the URL:

/search?q=QUERY

An AJAX search result replaces that with something that looks like:

/#q=QUERY

Here is an example below:

googleajax

Do you think this speed increase will actually make much difference? Both Google and Bing produce results in about a second, so will this increase actually hold much benefit to searchers? We would love to hear your thoughts below.

Yahoo SearchMonkey

From: google.com

For the past few months its been a case of Bing Search this, Google Search that, but not much on the Yahoo! front.

It seems Yahoo! have been busy tinkering under the bonnet of their search engine and in the last week, some of the enhancements have gone live on the search engine.

Its a well known fact that Yahoo! will be/is using Bing to power their organic search results, but the deal Yahoo! reserved the right to control how these results were displayed.

Well if the new Yahoo! Search Experience is anything to go by, they havent changed the Bing results all that much. Bings 3 column interface is now visible on Yahoo! with some apparent enhancements to Search Assistance and access to search features.

Check out the video below to view the marketing hype about the changes.

Yahoo! have also started incorporating more SearchMonkey enhanced listings into their organic results. This coincides with the 1 year anniversary for the launch of SearchMonkey.

For those unaware, SearchMonkey is Yahoo! Searchs new open platform.

Using SearchMonkey, developers and site owners can use structured data to make Yahoo! Search results more useful and visually appealing, and drive more relevant traffic to their sites.

yahoo-searchmonkey-sample

So now you can expect to see more enhanced listings when searching for product, local, entertainment, reference, social media and technology in Yahoo!

While none of these changes are game changers “ its good to see Yahoo! still trying to innovate and keep the search focus going.

Yahoo Video Search

From: google.com

Yahoo! has recently introduced an inline video play feature that shows videos directly on the video search results page. Now, searchers can view videos directly on the search results page without entering the site where a particular video is hosted.

The inline viewing feature happens to be a bit controversial feature since the sites boasting videos will definitely want the traffic to the sites. With the large number of embeddable videos and the new feature, searchers will end up viewing videos off-site.

Anyway, if searchers wish to use the inline viewing feature they can click Play Now under the thumbnail of the video search result. This will open a large overlay window and play the video on the results page.

Google and Nessie

From: google.com

We are winding down summer and it appears as if all of the newsmakers have gone on holiday or vacation or whatever you call it in your part of the world. So in order to keep you informed of the most important developments we have scoured the globe and found that Google Earth may unearthed one of the greatest legends of all time. The Loch Ness Monster! Thats right, Nessie!

Cmon. You know shes real. Shes just very elusive. Fortunately, there is virtually nothing that escapes the eyes of Google. Check her out!

Nessie Smaller

So what other mysteries can we turn to Google to solve? The origin of the universe? Time travel? How to open most small pieces of electronics packaged in those awful plastic things that cause harm to innocent consumers? What do you need from Google today? Ask and you shall receive.

Interestingly enough, Yahoo search engineers have been doing a great work to give you an enhanced Yahoo search experience. This is an interesting news coming when the Yahoo-Microsoft deal is just few months from materializing. The most prominent of the search enhancements is the new Yahoo search page design which according to a post on the Yahoo Search Blog will make search more personally relevant and helps people explore things that matter most to them. Here are some new things that have been rolled out on Yahoo Search:

  • A unique search page design realigning with the new Yahoo Home Page.
  • Easy access to various Yahoo search features including Search Pad, Search Scan and Safe Search have been made more easy.
  • Addition of Related searches in the search assist layer.
  • Enhanced search results from more sites such as Wikipedia

The enhancements made by Yahoo are being tested out to a selected percentage of U.S users, but might take some more time for you to see it live.

Search Ranking with Minute SEO Changes

From: google.com

SEOmoz has released its latest Search Engine Ranking Factors report which gives an idea on how SEO works in 2009. A total of seventy-two SEOs participated in SEOmoz’s survey that involved ranking possible factors used by Google while ranking websites, as well as a variety of questions pertaining current SEO trends and topics. The survey was completed earlier this year. The survey compiled the following as the top five ranking factors:

  • Anchor Text from External Links
  • Keyword Use in Title Tag
  • Raw Link Popularity
  • Diversity of Linking Domains
  • Keyword Use in Root Domain

If we compared this year’s list to that of 2007 survey by SEOmoz, it will come clear that the first three factors remain unchanged, however, the order is changed. The top five ranking factors in 2007 were:

  • Keyword Use in Title Tag
  • Global Link Popularity of Site (Raw Link Popularity above)
  • Anchor Text of Inbound Links (Anchor Text from External Links above)
  • Link Popularity within the Sites Internal Link Structure
  • Age of Site

SEOmoz’s 2009 survey ranking factors survey features negative ranking factors separately. It also features a new chart of Overall Ranking Algorithm elements.

After introducing ‘Standard AdSense font family’ back in February, Google AdSense is updating font styles for its ad units once again of late. Verdana: 300-250, 160-600, 468-60, 250-250, 234-60, 125-125, 180-150

Google Updates Geotargeting Tool

From: google.com

Ive written on multiple occasions about Googles GWT Getargeting tool (see all geotargeting posts here), and webmasters have long griped about the inability to use the tool with ccTLD (country level domains such as .co.uk, .ie etc). Well it seems that Google are slowly adding more ccTLDs to the list of domains that can be geotargeted via Google Webmaster Tools.

Not sure of all the ccTLDs added yet, but it does appear that .me was added recently, adding to .tv and a handful of other vanity ccTLDs that webmasters can now geotarget away from their origin country.

.ie is still hardwired to Ireland though. More info hopefully direct from the horses mouth.

Mobile Search Lead by Google

From: google.com

In todays daily chart from the Silicon Insider we get to see how well the top search properties are doing on PCs in contrast to Mobile. It probably wont come as much of a surprise that Google has the lead in Mobile just as it does on PCs. It was interesting to note, however, that Yahoo is farther behind Google on Mobile than on PCs despite its highly touted mobile portal and tools.

Yahoo! Sets More SearchMonkey Features to Default

From: searchenginewatch.com

Yahoo! is expanding the number of SearchMonkey features set to default-on in their search results. The update is the result of the completion of testing microformat templates.

Now, sites that provide structured data according to Yahoo!’s specified formats will automatically get SearchMonkey default-on status, allowing an enhanced result to be displayed in the SERPs.

Enhancements can include:

  • Video
  • Documents
  • Games
  • Products
  • Local Businesses
  • Event
  • Discussions
  • News items

Yahoo! is also turning on SearchMonkey defaults for Entertainment and Social Networking sites. Look for enhanced results from sites such as Netflix, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Friendster and Britannica.

The new defaults join a list of previously set SearchMonkey defaults. Facebook, Wikipedia, Citysearch, Zagat, Yelp and LinkedIn SearchMonkey apps have already been set to default.

Google and SpotMixer are teaming up to provide do-it-yourself in-stream video advertising. The ads can be produced for viewing on YouTube or the Google Content Network.

The feature is free unless you want a professional voice-over. Those services begin at $50.

This isn’t the first time Google and SpotMixer have partnered up. This past January, they paired up to offer DIY TV ads.
