Orato.com is seeking a full-time Community-Building Editor to join our Vancouver-based team. Orato.com is an online media company focused on the delivery of first-person citizen journalism for the global audience. Recently recognized as one of the top 12 news websites in the world by the 2008 Webby Awards (which have been called the Oscars of the Internet by the New York Times), Orato.com has attracted up to 100,000 visitors in one day.

The Community-Building Editor plays a key role in the positioning of Orato.com as an online leader in eyewitness, first-person stories and citizen journalism and is responsible for ensuring viral growth and high traffic.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of SEO techniques, along with a proven ability to develop and implement strategic linking campaigns. Being “Internetty” and “blog savvy” is essential. You must also possess strong editorial and writing skills. An understanding and appreciation of the citizen journalism movement and citizen journalists is necessary. Preference will be given to candidates with formal journalism training or a strong portfolio of first-person/ non-fiction writing. You will work with freelance writers and citizen journalists, editing their stories, moderating their comments, and, above all, encouraging their participation and proliferation of interest in Orato.com.

You are detail-oriented, well-organized and able to multi-task. Most importantly, you must be able to think outside the box and come up with innovative ways to get Orato.com to get noticed. You are a self-starter that is also comfortable working as a member of the team. You are OK with authority but can make your own case persuasively.

- establish and follow up linking partnerships
- image management
